Dear world,

if you are a lady and you’re using the word ‘cunt’ in a negative fashion, as an insult towards people who you dislike, and ESPECIALLY as an insult towards other ladies, you are not in fact reclaiming the slur. You are using it exactly the way everyone else has ever used it: as a slur.

It’s like how I can call myself queer and talk about queer people as a whole, but if I see someone walking along the road and scream “GET OFF THE STREET YOU FUCKING QUEER!” out my window, I am no longer reclaiming, I’m just using a slur.

Trying to do some kind of wishy-washy ‘well I’m not associating it with a vagina!’ excuse for using it as an insult is not going to fly. To use my previous example again: that would be like if I called people scumbag queers and then protested that I meant queer as in weird, not queer as in queer. Except it’s more like trying to call people ‘filthy cocksuckers’ and then saying you don’t mean cocksuckers as in people who suck cock, you mean cocksuckers as in a completely random collection of sounds that actually has no meaning because you have just stripped away every meaning it once had except for ‘bad to be called’.

You are using the exact same arguments people try to use to say they’re allowed to use slurs, by saying that you are capable of redefining one at a moment’s notice and removing every bit of power it ever had and completely separating it from its history as a slur while still using it as such. You are, essentially, defending its existence as a slur.

Tl;dr: you can’t say you’re reclaiming a slur while continuing to use it as an insult towards other members of the group it’s been historically directed at, that’s not what reclaiming means.

I am so tired of otherwise wonderful SJ blogs using terms like “basic bitch” and “privileged cunt” to insult people they don’t agree with. Shit.
